Clara MathieCLARA B. MATHIE Clara Mathie, 86, Waverly, Ohio, formerly of Potsdam, New York, passed away Monday, June 17, 2013 in Ohio. She was born on June 15, 1927, in Canton, Illinois, one of four sisters and one brother all of whom preceded her in death. During Clara’s teenaged years the family moved to Detroit, Michigan. She attended Wayne State University as an Education major, where as a member of the band she met and later married Gordon Mathie; after the birth of their sons they moved to Oxford, Michigan. The family moved to Potsdam in 1959, where Clara taught public school and Gordon was a member of the Crane faculty at SUNY Potsdam. Clara began her teaching career in the Raymondville school district, then later taught fifth grade for fifteen years in the St. Lawrence Central school. She retired in 1983 and became very active in the Potsdam library and in adult literacy programs. She belonged to the First United Methodist Church and was an active member of the church choir. The Mathies moved to Waverly, Ohio in 1999. Clara is survived by her husband Gordon; her son and daughter-in-law David and Diane of Boise, Idaho; her son and daughter-in-law John and Sharon of Cleveland, Ohio; and her grandson Stephen and wife Jennifer of Boise, Idaho. Arrangements are with the Boyer Funeral Home, Waverly, Ohio.

She was born 3 February 1931 in Friendship, OH, the daughter of the late Leslie Henry Roth and Rose (Hazelbaker) Roth. On 17 December 1948 she was united in marriage to Eugene David Oyer, who survives. Also surviving is a son Thomas David Oyer and wife Delores J. of Piketon, OH, two grandchildren, Amanda Rose Davison and husband James of Waverly, OH and Thomas David Oyer II and wife Leslie of Piketon, OH, a great grandson, Colten David Oyer, Piketon, OH and a brother Eugene Douglas Shaw of FL. Marcella formerly attended the Dailyville Free Will Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday, 23 June 2013 at the BOYER FUNERAL HOME in Waverly with Pastor Dale Reed, officiating. Burial will follow in McKendree Cemetery Near Friendship, OH. He was born November 28, 1955 in West Union, Ohio, the son of the late Donald Clyde McCann and Erma Marlene (Thompson) McCann of Lucasville. Surviving are a son, Donald Ray McCann of Piketon, Ohio, a daughter, Danielle Michelle McCann also of Piketon, a sister, Loretta Duke and husband John of Piketon and a nephew, Nathan Wayne Duke, Waverly, OH Danny was retired union carpenter. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at Mt. Olive Community Church. Burial will follow in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Lucasville. Knight and wife Loretta of West Minister, CO, two sisters Sandra Knight of Fox Lake, IL. and Penny Daniel and husband Walter of Canal Winchester, OH. In addition to his father his stepfather, John Clifford Couch and the mother of his children, Diane Knight preceded Paul in death. Paul was a former employee of the N&W Railroad, and a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served during the Vietnam Era. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. On October 23, 1993, Christopher was united in marriage to Nicole Lynn Coverdale McKee who survives. Also surviving are two children, Hunter McKee and Riley McKee at home, a sister, Angie Breech oh Piketon, grandmother, Bertha McKee of Piketon, mother-in-law, Jane Maggard and husband Tom of Waverly, and a special cousin Scott McKee of Waverly, Ohio. Christopher was a truck driver, a softball coach for many years, and a member of the PKC Beagle Club. He was born 26 January 1928 in Waverly, Oh the son of the late Harold Clarence Hines and Hazel Marie (Bapst) Hines. On 28 August 1970, Stanley was united in marriage to Patsy Ruth (Christman) Hines, who survives. Also surviving are three sons: Stanley Roger Hines, Jr. of Waverly, Ohio, James Jennings of Jackson, Ohio and Joseph D. Jennings and wife Shannon of Waverly, Ohio, four daughters, Amy Hines of Waverly, Ohio, Lorrie Cockrell and husband Rusty of Chillicothe Ohio, Rebecca Jennings of Waverly, Ohio and Rhonda Phipps of Portsmouth, Ohio, nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, Stanley was a founding member of the Waverly Baptist Temple and served as head Deacon for many years, a retired Farmer and a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. He was born February 27, 1933 in Paintsville, Kentucky, son of the late Foster Ward and Marie VanHoose Ward. On October 1, 1955, Charles was united in marriage to Darlene Newsome Ward who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Debra L. Sretenovic of Hilliard, Ohio, Brenda Lee Maynard of Canal Winchester, Ohio, six grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, one step great grandson, four brothers, Jim Ward and wife Ebby, Henry Ward and wife Mary, L.T. Ward and wife Annie and Walter Ward and wife Lizzie all of Waverly, as well as three sisters, Virgie of Canton, Ohio, Ann Swafford and husband Ed of Wilmington, Ohio and Jane Ward of Springfield, Ohio. In addition to his parents, three brothers, Andy, Marion Douglas and John Ward, and two sisters, Sylvia and Margaret Potter preceded Charles in death. Charles was a retired master woodsmith, timber cutter and a member of Mary Chapel United Baptist Church in Waverly. She was born March 11, 1924 in Akron, Ohio, daughter of the late Hubert Seale and Heston Dotson Seale. On November 2, 1953 Barbara was united in marriage to Lorel L. Highland who preceded her in death on April 2, 1986. Surviving is a son, Lorel James Highland of Lucasville, Ohio, a daughter, Judith Hignite of Piketon, four grandchildren, David and Larry Highland, Robert Hignite and Christine (Wes) Watson, as well as five great grandchildren. Norma L. Apel, 87, of Jackson WY, formerly of Waverly, OH, died Saturday July 13, 2013. She was born to George Arnold Armbruster and Ruby (Osborn) Armbruster on July 17 1925. Norma was preceded in death by her husband Charles, two brothers and a sister and is survived by a loving family and many dear friends. She was a graduate of Waverly High School and a former bookkeeper at Armbruster’s Plumbing & Heating and the Waverly Water & Sewer Department. Norma enjoyed her family and friends, gardening, cooking and traveling with Charles across the country in their RV. The funeral service will be held Saturday, July 20 at 11 am at the gravesite in Evergreen Union Cemetery in Waverly, OH with Rev. Rick Goodman officiating. A reception for the family and friends will immediately follow at the Lake White Club (1166 St. Rt. 552, Waverly, OH 45690). David Lyle Hendren David Lyle Hendren, 59, of Waverly, Ohio passed away July 16, 2013 after his battle with kidney cancer. He was born February 27, 1954 in Gallipolis, Ohio to Lloyd and Rose Marie (Sanders) Hendren. He was united in marriage Karin Wik on June 30, 1978, who survives. Also surviving are his sons, Michael of Marysville, OH, and Dane of Waverly, OH; grandson Wesley of Marysville, OH, siblings Brenda Smith of Celina, OH, Don (Diana) Hendren of North Baltimore OH, and Bertie (Vic) Muhlenkamp of Celina, OH; and brothers-in-law, Don (Charlotte) Wik of Springboro, OH and Alan (Sharon) Wik of Huber Heights, OH; and several nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by his parents, and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Edith and Thorvald Wik. He served his country in the U.S. Army. He had a love for motorcycles and he was looking forward to retirement to hunt and fish, after 24 years at Agricultural Marketing Services as Assistant Federal State Supervisor. Surviving are his wife Ethel Marie Flanary Dawson of 27 years, three daughters, Karen and Dennis Keever, Nancy and Larry Dennstedt, Linda and Brock Jones all of California, one son, Maderia Lynn Dawson of Piketon, two stepsons, Kenny and Carolyn Bartley of Wheelersburg, Ohio, Carl and Kathy Bartley of Goshen, Indiana, several grand and great grandchildren and one sister, Jean Humble of Waverly, Ohio. In addition to his parents, a sister, Anna Mae Dunham and several half sisters preceded Maderia in death. Maderia had worked the Dawson Dairy Farm, was owner of the Maderia Motel and Flea Market at Piketon, and had taught technical training through the Man Power Program. In 1980 She was united in marriage to Vernon Bowling who preceded her in death on May 8, 2009. Surviving are four children, James E. Forbes of Lucasville, Ohio, Jeffrey Forbes and wife Michelle of Piketon, Ohio, Diana L. Ingalls and husband Charles of Jackson, Ohio, Laura L. Jones and husband Frederick of Washington Court House, Ohio, 12 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, seven sisters, Marlene Williams and husband George of Athens, Ohio, Dorothy Weaver of Middletown, Ohio, Linda Callcott of Pfligerville, Texas, Carolyn Thomas of California, Janet Potter of Bucyrus, Ohio, Kathy Crooks and husband Travis of Budda, Texas and Connie Hidalgo of Austin, Texas. Eileen Pollard Bapst Eileen Pollard Bapst, 93, of Beaver, Ohio, died Monday July 29, 2013 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. She was born October 28, 1919 in New Boston, Ohio, to Samuel Curtis and Minnie Ethel Mason Pollard. On March 18, 1942 Eileen was united in marriage to Raymond L. Bapst who preceded her in death on August 25, 2008. Surviving are four children, Raymond (Charline) Bapst of Groveport, Ohio; Joyce (John) Wallach of Powell, Ohio; Kenneth (Lanita) Bapst of Stockdale, Ohio; and Jean (Frank) Gawronski of Powell. She was a haven of love for her seven grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, as well as to her step-grand and great grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Alma (Charles) Pollard Coit of The Villages, Florida; in-laws, Eugene Rockwell, Janet Bapst and Evelyn Pollard. In addition to her parents and husband, two brothers, Otho and Paul (Frances) Pollard and two sisters, Erma (Dale) McClurg and Ruth Pollard Rockwell preceded Eileen in death. Eileen was retired from a 40-plus years teaching career, beginning at Stockdale in 1939 and culminating upon retirement from Eastern Local School District in 1990. An avid genealogist, she served as president of Pike County Genealogical Society and compiled several books of records, including a “best seller” for the Society. She was a member of Beaver Emmanuel United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and served as church historian. She was President of the Pike County Retired Teachers Association and her love of learning never ceased, evidenced in her studies of the Bible in many versions and culling of thousands of court, funeral and other historical records. Eileen attended college at Ohio State University and Ohio University, where she obtained a Bachelors in Education. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday August 2, 2013 at Beaver Emmanuel United Methodist Church with Pastors Euggle Robertson and Rodney Bapst officiating. Burial will follow in Beaver Union Cemetery, Beaver. Visitation will be at the church from 4-8 p.m. Thursday and from 9:30 a.m. until the service on Friday. He was born April 12, 1957 in Kalamazoo, MI, the son of the late John Douglas Fourne I and Joanne Madeline (Gotts) Fourne. His wife Linda Blanton, Waverly, Ohio, survives John. Also surviving are his children, Dottie Blanton, Bobbie Walters and husband Dave, Danny Blanton and wife Heather, Rocky Blanton, Rick Blanton, Tiffany Blanton, fifteen grandchildren, 1 great grandson, four sisters, Tina Fourne, Penny Fourne, Judy Myers and Peggy Fourne. John was a retired concrete finisher. His parents and two sisters, Jennette Fourne and Trudy Fourne, preceded him in death. Calling hours will not be observed. Charles E. HelmanCharles E. Helman, 77, of Forest Hills, Waverly, Ohio, died 12:50 a.m. Monday, 29 July, 2013, at Pleasant Hill Manor, Piketon, Ohio. Charles was born 23 April, 1936, in Waverly, the son of the late Hobart Cletus Helman and Felma Florinda (Reed) Helman. On 23 February, 1958, he was united in marriage to Marianna (Sims) Helman, his loving and devoted wife of 55 years survives. Also surviving are: sons, Charles J. Helman of Falls Church, Virginia, and Steven E. Helman and wife Melissa of Lewisville, North Carolina; daughter, Kathryn E. Helman of Gaithersburg, Maryland; grandchildren, Emilie, Joseph C., Owen and Corrine; brother, Hobart R. Helman and wife Ava, of Sarasota, Florida; and sister, Carolyn Lichtenberg of Greenville, South Carolina. Charlie and Marianna owned and managed Helman Flowers of Waverly for thirty-three years, retiring in 1998. In 1968, Charlie started a Christmas Open House at the florist shop that blossomed throughout the community into the many businesses Holiday Open Houses and the Jingle Bell Parade in Waverly. A graduate of Waverly High School Class of 1954, he was the first baseman on the 1954 Ohio High School State Championship Baseball Team (Class B). He was a member of Orient Lodge #321, F. & A.M, Waverly, member of Waverly Chapter #99, O.E.S., Waverly, a member of the York Rite bodies in Chillicothe, Scottish Rite, Valley of Columbus, and a member of the Aladdin Shrine, Columbus. Charlie was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held 11 o’clock Friday, 2 August, 2013, at the BOYER FUNERAL HOME, Waverly with Pastor David Burriss officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Union Cemetery, Waverly. Friends may call at the funeral home and from 5 - 8 p.m, on Thursday, August 1 from 9 a.m. until the service on Friday.
